  2. I like all of the windows arond the top of the house. Do you think it would provide much light because of the overhang so close to it, or is it for aesthetics?

  3. James, the high windows admit a great quantity of light, even when the overhang shades them.

The overhang is designed to shade the windows during the summer when the sun is high in the sky, and let the sun come in during the winter when the sun is lower in the sky. But even during the summer when there is no direct sunlight there is still lots of ambient light that comes from the sky. The sky is bright blue, right? Not black like at night. All that blue sky is light reflecting at your house.

I can prove it, and so can you. Go to the north side of your home or office (Northern hemisphere only please!). Is there daylight coming in those north windows? Sure there is. Any direct sun. Nope, that's around the south side of the house.
