The main thing we want to see here is the way the Cube House roof deck opens up to the side revealing a bit about how the inside spaces are stacked. Kitchen is the horizontal window at the ground floor rear, home office the big window at the front. Continue reading "0380 Cube House from the side"

The U House, from the side. The way that the U House is transparent in some directions, and opaque in others is why it has potential for an interesting relationship with the landscape. Site your house carefully! Continue reading "0518 U House from the side"

Just come with me, to the Pretender House family room, over behind this chair - as far back as you can get into the corner. Ok, now turn around. There - there's the whole place. The living room and foyer beyond, the dining room and the kitchen peaking out through the openings. Ok. Got that? Continue reading "0237 Pretender the whole thing"

Yeah, sure the L House looks every bit the modern house out front, but your neighbors will never suspect the urban loft hiding there behind the suburban face. Hey - its your secret, we won't tell anyone. Continue reading "0857 L House hiding in plain site"

No matter how you slice it, its the Palo Alto House all the way through. Ok - put your back against the sliding doors to the back terrace. Now look through the sliders to the courtyard, through the court - there is the front gate. And you are still in your private realm - like bathrobe territory. Seriously! Continue reading "0738 Palo Alto all the way through"

With the last days of Spring on us it is really starting to feel like Summer around here. What a better way to enjoy these days than with a great front porch to hang out on like the Lagom House. Continue reading "0970 Lagom House front porch"

The XHouse1 lets you know as soon as you enter that this is not an ordinary house. The entry foyer has an 8ft ceiling, but just beyond you have a glimpse of the large loft like living space that stretches the full width of the house. The steps from the foyer to the living room are the start of the path that winds its way up through the house finally ending at the master bedroom at the top of the house. One of the best features of the Plat House is the large bay window in the living room - large enough for a couple of comfortable chairs from which you can enjoy the view. Continue reading "0242 Plat House bay window you can live in"

In the last RoHouse post we started to look at the transverse stair floor plan with a view of the living room. Here we see the kitchen and dining table which is a couple of steps down from the living room. This puts the kitchen at the ground level of the rear courtyard and makes a high ceiling in the kitchen/dining space. This informal dining combined with the kitchen, while setting the living room apart on a higher level characterizes the transverse plan, and is distinctly different from the longitudinal plan which we will look at next Continue reading "1204 RoHouse inside the transverse plan"

Layers of space is what you see here, from the Tray House living room, to the circulation zone behind that stretches from the kitchen out of frame to the left to the study at the right, and the entry foyer beyond, and a front porch beyond that. Upstairs is the hallway, and the bedrooms beyond. And on the stair you see through the high windows to the outside wall. Layers, layers... Continue reading "0385 Tray House look at all the layers."

I can tell you this much, if you manage to find the right site, get your plans and a good builder, and get yourself a sweet XHouse5, then some busy summer afternoon you're gonna just walk out to the curb to look at it, and take it all in. I can't believe I got this cool house. Continue reading "1201 XHouse5 here's the deal"

The XHouse3 has an iconic profile that says HOUSE, in a way that only a little green monopoly house can rival. It would be nothing more than that except its boxy pair of bedroom dormers on the front tell you there is something more going on here. Its that mix of modern detail and traditional profile that creates the look we call MoTrad! Continue reading "0967 XHouse3 going up"

The entry foyer of the Steel Case House is so much like a traditional American colonial house - right inside the front door you are confronted with the home's stair hall, a coat closet off to the side, and kitchen one way, living room the other... But all the ways it is so not like a colonial house is more than obvious everywhere else! Continue reading "0357 Steel Case House entry foyer"

Here is a view of the entry foyer from the Cube House design. It has a freestanding cabinet that has a coat closet and a shelf with mirror right by the door. This closet acts a screen for the home office space beyond. Behind is is a similar screen wall between the entry and living room. Continue reading "0380 Cube House entry foyer"

A great part of the Pretender's design is the way the upstairs hall opens up to the 2 story living room. The stair in this design lives in the living room, so this connection really makes this space into the central hub of the house. Continue reading "0237 Pretender take it from the top"
